From the depths of the sea… a tidal wave of terror!
Once the townspeople of Krabi in Southern Thailand feasted on crab, now the crabs feast on them; giant crab monsters, towering above their prey, their eyes lifeless except for a hunger for human flesh!
Arrrrgggggghhhhhh!
Pretty slick intro, eh? I must admit I stole that first bit from the tagline to Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), but I dear you to stand before these bronze behemoths and not feel like you’re in some kind of old-school science fiction film.
One giant, monster of a crab stands surrounded by three smaller – but no less frightening – mud crabs on Krabi’s shoreline, just a short walk from the main town centre.
It’s visually stunning and yet I have no idea why such a monument to the crustacean exists in Krabi except that the Thai town’s name looks to be a little like crabby – but it’s pronounced more like Grabby.
Krabi is a peaceful town in southern Thailand that acts as a gateway for travellers looking to rock-climb in Rai Leh or relax at Koh Phi Phi, the island paradise where The Beach was filmed.
But don’t be put off. Krabi, although boasting no real beaches of its own, is well worth spending a bit of time in – if only to pose for your own “killer crab” photo. They’re well worth seeking out if you find yourself in this part of the world.
If you are looking for a city with beautiful beaches in Thailand, however, you should stay in one of the hotels in Phuket – a city that is located relatively close to Krabi.
