Are you planning a getaway or vacation in the near future? Whatever your idea of a dream vacation is, planning ahead is key if you’re going to come home with memories you’ll actually want to share with others! We’ve all heard vacation horror stories of one sort or another; you don’t have to be one of them.
Basically, there are two ways you can get to your destination – you can drive (either your car, or pack up an RV and go on a road trip); or, you can fly/cruise to an exotic, far-away locale.
Road Trip
- Have your car thoroughly checked before you go: Let your trusted mechanic know that you’ll be traveling, and make sure your car is road-worthy. This includes the tires! Change the oil, check the belts, brakes, transmission fluid, and all other major components of your vehicle. You don’t want to spend your vacation on the side of the road waiting for a tow-truck! If you’re renting a car or RV, make sure it’s from a reputable dealer and let them know where you’re going to be taking it, etc. It is their responsibility to ensure they provide you with a safe and reliable vehicle, regardless of your destination.
- Make sure you have the right car insurance coverage: Whether you’re going to be traveling across the country, or just across the State, you need the right type of insurance. Let your agent know your travel plans so that they can advise you on any extra coverage you may need.
- It’s not just about the destination: Sure, when you get in the car, you have an end-point in mind, but don’t forget to take in the scenery on your way. Stop to get out and take pictures, visit a local coffee shop or even have a picnic in the park. Don’t be in such a rush to get to where you’re going, that you miss everything in between.
- Use a reputable travel agent: If you’re booking a hotel or vacation package, make sure the one you choose understands your needs and budget.
- Don’t forget your GPS! Maps are great too, you don’t want to get lost, particularly if you’re on a timeline.
Exotic Locale
- Make sure your passport is up-to-date: Some countries have strict rules regarding entering/exiting their country and your passport expiry date. Make sure your passport is up-to-date and that you will be free to enter/exit with no issues. If you have doubts, talk to your travel agent.
- Your travel agent is your best friend: You’re going to depend on this person to provide you with the best accommodations and vacation packages so make sure they are reputable. This point cannot be stressed enough! Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make sure they know what you’re looking for. Tell them in advance if you’re going to need special services (such as a crib in your hotel room, etc.)
- Learn to pack light: You don’t need a shirt for every day you’re going to be gone; learn to pack the bare necessities. Hotels generally have laundry services, but if you’re on a budget you can always rinse out your clothes and hang them in the bathroom to dry. Leave some room in your suitcase so you can bring a few souvenirs home.

Get to know some of the locals, learn more about their culture, visit museums and spend some time in local shops.
