1. Kuala Lumpur is the largest city in all of Malaysia.

2. It’s also the federal capital of Malaysia.

3. And an “alpha city”, which basically means that Kuala Lumpur is a city that links major economic regions into the world economy.

4. That’s not bad for a city that was founded in the 1850s by Chinese tin miners.

5. And was named Kuala Lumpur – Malay for “muddy estuary” – because it lies at the confluence of two rivers: the Klang River and the Gombak River.

6. At the time of writing, the hottest it has ever been in Kuala Lumpur is 38.5°C, and the coldest is a fairly mild (by international standards) 14.4°C.

7. Kuala Lumpur was captured by the Japanese during World War Two, who occupied the city from 11 January 1942 until 15 August 1945 when they surrendered following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

9. The Kuala Lumpur Tower is also fairly iconic. It’s currently the seventh tallest tower in the world, with a higher view point that’s open to the public than the Petronas Towers.

10. Kuala Lumpur is a shopper’s paradise with more than 60 shopping malls. Suria KLCC, the mall at the base of the Petronas Towers, happens to be where I bought my now-wife her engagement ring.

  1. We are going to Malaysia next month and I’m still undecided if to visit KL or not as have heard rather mixed and often boring reviews. So far its Ipoh and the Cameron Highlands and just need to find a little beach paradise to visit x
