Historical attractions in Rome that you must visit

The Roman Colosseum in all its glory

If you’re looking for a city that’s packed to the rafters with world-famous historical sites and thousands of years of human history, you’ve come to the right place. Rome will certainly not disappoint.

From the Colosseum to the Pantheon, Rome’s heritage is truly iconic, so make sure that you don’t miss out on any of it during your Italian break.

The Colosseum

Built almost 2,000 years ago, the Colosseum was – and still is – a triumph of architecture and design. Able to hold a staggering 80,000 people, the Colosseum played host to gladiatorial combat, battle re-enactments and executions, forming the hub of Roman social life.

The Pantheon

As one of the best preserved Roman buildings, the Pantheon gives visitors an authentic glimpse into the ancient world. Its central location makes it easy to visit from many of the best hotels in Rome and its round design, which features in Rome’s skyline, is instantly recognisable.

Inside, the domed roof is even more pronounced and is emphasised by the pillars that surround the base. Ancient paintings adorn the walls and although the interior décor has been altered and added to over the years, a visit to the Pantheon is still a must for anyone visiting the Eternal City.

Palatine Hill

The centremost of the Seven Hills of Rome, Palatine Hill is one of the most ancient parts of the city and looks down on the Roman Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other.

The Hill is scattered with historic sites including The House of Augustus, The House of Livia and The Palace of Septimius Severus.

The Roman Forum

For centuries, the Roman Forum was at the very centre of city life. Public speeches would be held here, business deals conducted and elections carried out.

In its heyday, the Forum was home to many of the city’s most important buildings, the ruins of which can still be seen by the modern visitor.

Visiting the sites of Ancient Rome is an important part of any trip to Italy’s capital and will give you a deeper understanding of a civilisation that conquered half the world. Once you’ve visited the main historic sites, spend an afternoon simply walking through the streets of Rome, where the abundance and beauty of the ancient relics is a history lesson in itself!
